Towards sustainable forest management through improving the quality of seedlings for household plantation in Nghe An and Quang Binh provinces

Improving the productivity and economic efficiency of plantation, limiting the risk of forest pests and diseases is one of the requirements of sustainable forest management under the Vietnam Forest Certification Scheme (VFCS/PEFC). Within the framework of cooperation with PEFC and International Woodchip Corporation PTE LTD (IWC), the Vietnam Forest Certification Office has supported two nurseries to produce high-quality Acacia hybrid seedlings in Nghe An and Quang Binh provinces. Cooperatives and households who wishing to produce Acacia hybrid seedlings but do not have information to access to high-quality seedling and do not have Acacia hybrid breeding technique.

In Nghe An province, a household namely Chien Thanh (in Chau Cuong commune, Quy Hop district, Nghe An province) who trading Acacia hybrid was selected to support. In Quang Binh province, Ca Xen Youth Agricultural Service Cooperative (in Thanh Hoa commune, Tuyen Hoa district, Quang Binh province) has been supported. Each nursery is provided with 3,000 high quality seedlings of Acacia hybrid (propagated by tissue culture) with clone of BV523, BV434 and BV16 as well as providing guidance on planting techniques, trees caring, nursery development, cutting culture and caring for Acacia hybrid seedlings. The cooperative and household are also handed over full seed origin documents for seedling production registration according to current regulations.
