The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. Among these goals, forests make significant contributions to Goals 13, 14, and 15.
Indicator 15.2.1 of Goal 15 highlights the importance of sustainable forest management in countries through national and international certification systems. Accordingly, forest areas certified for Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) under PEFC are used in reports by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to reflect a country’s efforts in sustainable forestry development and SDG implementation.
Sustainable management certification plays a vital role in ensuring that forest management activities meet sustainability requirements in economic, social, and environmental aspects – particularly in protecting biodiversity, maintaining and enhancing ecosystem services, and promoting the use and trade of legal, transparent, and sustainable wood and wood-based products.
